Bachelor in Laboratory Science Pathway (IIHS Sri Lanka + Metropolia Finland)

About The Program

The Bachelor in Laboratory Science Pathway is a high-impact international progression route for diploma holders who want to become industry-ready laboratory professionals with modern chemical + biological analytical competence and international exposure.

This pathway is designed to support credit recognition (RPL) for prior biosciences/biomedical learning and then enable students to complete advanced laboratory studies in Finland through Metropolia’s Laboratory Science ecosystem. Metropolia’s Laboratory Science education emphasises hands-on competence and modern lab methods (with a strong focus on instrumental analysis and applied laboratory work). (Metropolia)

What you graduate prepared to do (in plain terms): function as a laboratory analyst who understands laboratory operations and can perform, develop, and validate analytical methods used in chemistry and biology. (Metropolia)

Global Opportunities

Studying in Finland places you in an environment where degrees are structured using ECTS, the standard credit system used across the European Higher Education Area—supporting transparency and recognition of study periods across countries. (European Education Area)

Metropolia is also an active Erasmus+ institution (Erasmus Charter for Higher Education), reflecting established European mobility and collaboration mechanisms. (Metropolia)

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences are prepared for a variety of scientific and healthcare roles, including:

  • Biomedical Scientist, working in clinical laboratories to support diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of diseases
  • Research Assistant/Coordinator in medical, pharmaceutical, or biotechnology research
  • Laboratory Technologist specialising in haematology, microbiology, immunology, or biochemistry
  • Public Health and Epidemiology Officer supporting disease prevention, surveillance, outbreak investigation, and public health interventions.
  • Pharmaceutical and Biotech Roles in quality assurance, regulatory support, or product development
  • Global Career Opportunities across the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Australia, and North America

Why You Should Study the Bachelor in Laboratory Science

  • International 1+1 structure: start in Sri Lanka, complete the advanced specialization year in Finland.

  • Practical, lab-intensive learning: Metropolia’s Laboratory Science training is strongly practice-based, with substantial laboratory teaching and applied skill development. (Metropolia)

  • Career versatility across biosciences labs: competency spans instrumental analysis, QA/QC, method validation, and analytical workflows relevant to multiple industries. (Metropolia)

  • EU-aligned credit structure (ECTS): 60 ECTS ≈ one full-time academic year, which supports international readability of your learning. (European Education Area)

  • Future-ready themes: strong alignment to sustainability and responsible laboratory practice (e.g., green & sustainable chemistry).

Career Opportunities (Tangible, high-demand examples)

Graduates with Laboratory Science (analytical chemistry + bioanalytical competence) can pursue roles such as:

  • Laboratory Analyst / Laboratory Researcher / Quality Specialist / Validation Specialist (Metropolia)
  • Quality Control (QC) / Quality Assurance (QA) in pharmaceuticals, biotech, medical devices, and manufacturing labs (Metropolia)
  • Food safety & authenticity labs (e.g., contaminant testing, preservative analysis, food fraud investigations) (Metropolia)
  • Environmental testing laboratories (water/air quality monitoring, elemental analysis, pollution and public health testing) (Metropolia)
  • Forensic and regulatory laboratories (analytical separations, identification workflows, ronments) (Metropolia)
  • Pathogenic microbe detection support roles in applied bioscience testing pipelines (non-clinical sampling focus) (Metropolia)
