In October 2002, ACHS was granted an articulation arrangement with the long-established nursing program at Pacific Union College, meaning students who wished to complete a bachelor's degree could transfer to the American college. The curriculum was approved by the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka.

With this in mind, ACHS was officially opened in November 2002, and the college commenced its first intake in January 2003.

In 2006, ACHS partnered Hemas Hospital (Pvt) Ltd to train 150 nurses and moved to a larger facility in the north of Colombo. To reflect its broader, global ambitions, the college was rebranded International Institute of Health Sciences (IIHS) in 2008. The Australian Government helped facilitate an affiliation with Deakin University of Australia. Today, IIHS works with more than 20 international Universities affiliations. Since 2006, IIHS has been led by its entrepreneurial CEO Dr Kithsiri Edirisinghe. The years since has seen IIHS broaden its discipline spread to include biomedicine, education, business, physiotherapy among many other allied health fields. We’ve also educated over 4000 graduates and grown campus facilities to become the best of breed health educators in South Asia.

2021 will see IIHS expand to offer locally accredited degree qualifications to local students and we will recruit large numbers of international students from all over the region and the world to our new multiversity campus, again located in Colombo’s north.

In 2022, IIHS marked a significant milestone when its Co-Founder and CEO, Dr. Kithsiri Edirisinghe, received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Health Sciences from the Open University of Malaysia. The internationally recognised honour acknowledged his visionary leadership, contribution to healthcare education, and commitment to creating accessible and globally relevant learning opportunities. This recognition reflected both Dr. Edirisinghe’s leadership and IIHS’s transformation from a pioneering healthcare training institute into a regionally recognised education provider with thousands of students and growing global partnerships.

The opening of the IIHS Multiversity campus in Kerawalapitiya in 2023 marked a defining milestone in the growth and development of IIHS. Designed as a purpose-built, international-standard healthcare education facility, the campus introduced modern lecture halls, collaborative learning areas, advanced training spaces, and improved facilities for student engagement. It created a dynamic environment where academic learning, professional development, research, innovation, and extracurricular activities could come together under one roof. The establishment of the Multiversity further strengthened IIHS’s commitment to delivering globally recognised healthcare education while supporting students through scholarships, mentoring, career guidance, and international academic pathways. It also reflects the institution’s long-term vision of positioning Sri Lanka as a leading regional destination for healthcare education and developing graduates with the knowledge, skills, and global outlook required for the future.

IIHS and Coventry University Group signed a landmark agreement to begin IIHS’s transformation into a Coventry University Group branded campus. Further collaboration with Asia e University expanded opportunities in nursing, health administration and internationally connected learning.

IIHS marked a key milestone in healthcare education by launching Asia’s first Master’s in Digital Health awarded by the University of Surrey, UK. Delivered in Sri Lanka, the programme equips healthcare and technology professionals with expertise in digital health systems, informatics, data analytics and emerging technologies, strengthening Sri Lanka’s position as a regional hub for internationally recognised healthcare education.

In March 2026, IIHS Multiversity marked a significant milestone by serving as the Official Education Partner of the Medicare 2026 International Healthcare Exhibition at BMICH, Colombo. The event provided a prominent national platform for IIHS to showcase its globally recognized healthcare education pathways, international university partnerships, and commitment to innovation in healthcare training. A major highlight was the official launch of the University of Surrey’s MSc in Digital Health, delivered in Sri Lanka through IIHS Multiversity. The launch strengthened IIHS’s role in advancing digital transformation in healthcare by preparing professionals in areas such as health informatics, telemedicine, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and digital healthcare systems. This milestone further reinforced IIHS’s position as a leading regional institution connecting healthcare education, technology, and global career opportunities.
